Care and preservation of an important local history collection of archival materials and artefacts forms another of SWACS’ main responsibilities. These consist of a large photographic collection (which is currently closed as it is undergoing digitisation) plus manuscript materials (also currently closed) and artefacts relating to the Caves, Castle, local schools, industries, natural history and general locale. Displays include domestic, educational, and industrial artefacts, geological and zoological specimens, and an array of photographs reflecting the rich diversity of the area.
Access to the collections is presently restricted to SWACS’ official Open Sundays (see Events section) due to their being held in the basement suite of East Wemyss Primary School. It is however hoped that a dedicated archival and museum space will become available that will enable us to create a more cohesive learning and storage space for this unique historical collection.
Meanwhile, a comprehensive catalogue is under construction. The plan is to put the collections online via a dedicated database. So watch this space!
