SWACS were very lucky to have Marcus Abbott from York Archaeological Trust (YAT) to give our annual lecture.
This year we were in the Old Kirk: with its stained glass windows and grand architecture a most impressive venue. Marcus chose as his title Wemyss 4D: A Digital Approach to Time and Space. Of course, he spoke about the Wemyss Caves visualization project with which he is heavily involved, but he put the work at this site in the context of what he’d previously learned from other projects, in particular those at Stonehenge and Creswell Crags. It was fascinating to see something of the evolution of the powerful photographic and laser scanning techniques that have been used and to gain some insight into what more we may find out about our caves once the data processing is complete. Many thanks to Marcus for such an interesting and informative evening.
