Bagster’s Comprehensive Bible
This 19th century Bagster’s Comprehensive Bible is one of SWACS’ more enigmatic historical holdings. As the origins are unclear we would be interested to hear from anyone has any idea regarding its provenance. It may be a relict of West Wemyss Primary School which replaced Wemyss Colliery School (built c.1859).
30th Anniversary Conference
Many thanks to all the speakers and visitors who came to our 30th Anniversary Celebration event last Saturday. We counted around 100 people there over the day and the speakers were excellent and informative from start to finish. For those who missed it, all the talks can be seen below.

Remembering Marilyn Jenkins
SWACS are pleased to remember Marilyn Jenkins, one of the Society’s stalwarts who passed on last year (5th October), with the installation of a bench for the community on the shore front just behind St Mary’s by the Sea, East Wemyss. Marilyn had been with the Society since its inception
Thanks for coming
Many thanks to everyone who came along to last night’s public meeting about vandalism in the caves, which was well-attended and extremely positive. Lots of ideas were put forward for what we can do immediately, and longer term, to protect the caves for generations to come. Thanks to Peter Grant
Public meeting announced
Following the recent acts of vandalism to the caves, we were heartened by the enormous interest and messages of support we received. We are therefore holding a public meeting next Wednesday 10th August for everyone with an interest in the caves, and ideas about how we can help protect and
Vandalism in Jonathan’s Cave
Very regrettably we have to report that Jonathan’s Cave was targeted some time last week by vandals who used spray cans to draw graffiti both outside the cave and inside on areas containing Pictish carvings. We have reported this to police and will be working with Historic Environment Scotland under
Mercat Shopping Centre stall
SWACS have had a stall at the Mercat Shopping Centre in Kirkcaldy this week, alongside other local heritage groups. We’ll still be there on Friday and Saturday, so why not pop in and see us all?
SWACS use RTI skills to help out
In the cemetery of Kirkcaldy Old Kirk there is a very strange gravestone. Its two sides each have a different dedication, commemorating deaths separated by some twenty years. One side is dedicated by his brother to a man who was buried at sea in 1808. The other side names a
SWACS host archaeologists’ tour
This weekend we took part in the SCHARP Conference in St Andrews which gathered together archaeologists and volunteers who work to record, protect and publicise coastal heritage sites across Scotland. It was an amazing day where we heard about the work being done by groups like ours from Stranraer to
